Increasing Traffic to Your Website

by Steve on November 11, 2009

As a small business owner, I’m assuming you have, or are at least in the process of building, a website. But once you build it, how can you be sure people actually find it. Unlike Field of Dreams, building it does not ensure that “they” will come. There are easy ways to increase traffic to your site.

Make sure your meta tags use popular keywords that resonate with your target market.  Your meta tag is the hidden description or title of your website and you or your Web designer can tinker with this. Learn about your customers and their needs and then use Google Keywords to find the best combination to attract them.

Your website URL (address) should be EVERYWHERE: on print materials, in your email signature, on all of your social media profiles, on your business cards and on your company vehicles, if applicable.

Adding a blog to your website can increase traffic significantly. Why? It attracts a larger audience. If you are a machine shop and you write a blog post about a particular tool, when someone does an online search for that tool, they can find your site. You can essentially cast your net to a larger audience. When I write on a topic like the Window’s 7 release, individuals doing a search for information on the new product can find My Small Business Mentor’s site.

In addition to adding a companion blog to your website, commenting on other blogs is helpful also. Every time you leave a comment, you are able to leave your website link and, when people read your comment, they are likely to click on your profile and link.

Interestingly enough, the more traffic your website gets, the higher your ranking on Google (which then, in turn, builds more traffic). Taking the time to invest in some easy changes or upgrades on your site can reap many rewards.
